World Open Water Swimming Association Advisory Board’s Decision on Diana Nyad’s 2013 Cuba to Florida Swim Official Statement on the Denial of Ratification for Diana Nyad’s Swim
San Francisco, CA (WOWSA) September 11, 2023 – In August 2013, Diana Nyad undertook her 5th attempt to swim from Cuba to Florida. This endeavor took place after similar Cuba-to-Florida crossings by Walter Poenisch (utilizing a shark cage, with snorkel and fins) and Susan Maroney (utilizing a shark cage, without snorkel and fins).
Following the Diana Nyad crossing, a number of controversies related to the swim were raised and shared publicly by experienced open water swimmers. Some of the controversies can be summarized as follows:

Daniel Slosberg wants me to watch a TV clip. It's from an October 1998 episode of The Roseanne Show. Among the guests is Diana Nyad, who at the time was the most famous female swimmer this country ever produced. Slosberg, a former participant in the niche sport of endurance swimming where Nyad toiled, directs me to the part of the show where Nyad recalled with passion her participation in the Olympic trials, where she claims to have competed as a 17-year-old hoping to secure a spot at the Mexico City Games of 1968.

Gertjan Nieuwenkamp uit Middelburg gaat 'een stukje' zwemmen voor het goede doel, namelijk Sea Shepherd. Hij vertrekt vannacht om 01.00 uur vanuit het Engelse Dover en hoopt twaalf uur later aan te komen bij Cap Griz-Nez in Frankrijk. In totaal is dat 35 kilometer.

De Helderse slager en ademcoach Gert-Jan Wit heeft de oversteek van het Kanaal gehaald. Met de handen in de lucht werd hij door de bemanning van de volgboot gefilmd toen hij het strand van Calais bereikte.

Ultrazwemmer Matthieu Bonne heeft het wereldrecord non-stop zwemmen in zee gebroken. De ultrasporter uit Bredene legde de afgelopen 60 uur en 55 minuten 131 kilometer aan één stuk af in de Baai van Korinthe in Griekenland. "Ik kan het niet geloven", geeft hij mee in een eerste reactie. "De laatste kilometers waren heel zwaar."

Ultrasporter Matthieu Bonne (29) is goed op weg om het wereldrecord non-stop openwaterzwemmen te verpulveren. Na de tweede nacht in Griekse wateren heeft hij al 110 kilometer achter de kiezen. Als alles goed gaat, bereikt hij vanavond rond 20 uur zijn doel.
