Easy win for Aurelie Mueller

The 2016 season of the LEN European Open Water Swimming Cup has already kicked off with a competition staged before the beginning of the calendar year. The beautiful island of Madeira was the location, nearby the city of Funchal – birthplace of the Portugal football icon, Cristiano Ronaldo – where the 10km race took place.

France’s 10km world champion Aurelie Muller was the star of the event and she brought her best to the course: she won easily, building a winning margin of 26 seconds ahead of Portugal’s Angelica Andre.

The men’s race saw a much tougher battle involving Britain’s Tobias Robinson, Hungary’s Daniel Szekelyi and France’s Marc Olivier. In the extremely tight finish the three in front hit the panel in a span of 0.58sec with the Brit prevailing. Szekely – runner-up in last season’s overall – came second the Olivier had to settle for the bronze medal this time.
