As thousands of swimmers get ready to take part in the popular "Festive Dip” over Christmas and New Year, St John Ambulance shares its first aid advice for swimmers braving the icy and, in some cases, polluted waters.
Over recent years, wild swimming in winter has seen a surge in popularity, with people of all ages enjoying the physical and mental health benefits. A survey by Outdoor Swimmer found over 65 per cent of its readers chose to exercise at local beaches and lakes during the colder months.

Over the course of history since 1872, several thousands of solo attempts have been made to swim across the 33.5 km English Channel between England and France.
Of those thousands of soloists, 68 different swimmers from 17 countries (Great Britain, Italy, USA, Germany, France, Egypt, Denmark, Canada, Bulgaria, Australia, Syria, Turkey, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Czech Republic, Brazil, and Argentina) set or broke a speed record swimming across the English Channel over the last 148 years.

All Halls of Fame and Honor Organizations wish to create and maintain the highest possible reputation. As a result, all face a similar question: What are the correct and appropriate actions, as well as reasons, which justify an individual (or organization) to be prevented from induction or removed if previously inducted? There are no right answers. Every organization must find its own way.

One might think that a big wide-open lake or ocean could accommodate thousands of swimmers and, therefore, entry into a race or arranging a solo swim would be easy. The explosion of interest in open water swimming has resulted in the same kind of entry issues you read about in the New York (running) Marathon and Ironman (triathlon) in Hawaii. Excessive demand imposes real constraints on swimmer numbers.

On February 6, 2023, the world of swimming lost a long-time ambassador in 96-year-old Greta Andersen. One of the greatest swimmers of all time, Andersen burst onto the world’s stage when she won the gold medal in the 100-meter freestyle at the 1948 London Olympics. When she returned home to Copenhagen Denmark, she was a national hero.
After moving from her native Denmark to Long Beach, California, in 1953, she found she needed to make a living. She met Tom Park, a record-setting Catalina Channel swimmer, who convinced her she had what it took to be a successful marathon swimmer.

This Egyptian battleship tore through open-water marathon swimming with ease, finesse and generosity
Heroes of swimming would like to issue an apology. Some weeks ago, we described Johnny Weissmuller as the greatest swimmer ever. We may have misled you, and if we did, we're sorry.
Who, though, is Johnny's rival for Heroes of swimming's affections? An Egyptian swimmer called Abdel Latif Abu Heif: a legend not of the pool, but of the open water. If you haven't heard of him, you're not alone. Outside his native country – where streets and children were named after him, and he was feted wherever he went – Abu Heif's name is familiar only to a small circle of open-water marathon-racing fans.

Yet the earliest humans from over 100,000 years ago taught themselves how to swim, for food and for pleasure. There is a long history of human swimming for utility and leisure, amply recorded in pictures from the earliest cave drawings and folk narratives.

A legend of a swimmer tells a legend of a tale about the first successful False Bay crossing, back in 1989.
While seven South African swimmers are set on to take on the Everest of all swims, the English Channel, one local man remembers the first time a European woman came out and swam across South Africa’s very own Channel – the daunting 34km False Bay.
