Voor de eerste keer ooit heeft iemand een rondje om IJsland gezwommen. Het werd gedaan door de 39-jarige ultramarathonzwemmer Ross Edgley, beter bekend als de Britse 'Thor'. "Je lichaam krijgt het gewoon constant zwaar te verduren."

With just a wetsuit and neoprene accessories to protect him from the extreme cold, British endurance athlete and adventurer Ross Edgley has once again defied the limits of human performance, completing a record-breaking swim around the coastline of Iceland.
Starting on Saturday 17th May, Edgley has since covered over 1,000 miles (1610 km), finishing at Nauthólsvík Beach in Reykjavík today, Monday 8th September.

6 May 2025 - An open water swimming event firm says it has been forced to close down after the "relentless publicity" over water quality in the River Thames led to a huge drop in numbers entering its swims.
Henley Swim has been running events on the River Thames for over 20 years, including the Henley Swim Festival and the Thames Marathon from Henley to Marlow.

The open water swimming events at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore ran from July 16–20 at Palawan Beach on Sentosa Island. The championships are the sport’s most prestigious stage outside the Olympics, featuring the 10 km Olympic distance as the signature race, alongside the 5 km and mixed relay. This year also saw the debut of the innovative 3 km knockout sprint—an addition that pushed athletes into high‑intensity racing across multiple distances. Success at Worlds defines international rankings, national team selection, and the careers of the sport’s best.

Florian Wellbrock heeft tijdens de wereldkampioenschappen in Singapore zijn vierde wereldtitel veroverd door samen met Celine Rieder, Oliver Klemet en Isabel Gose het goud te winnen in de estafette 4x1500 meter open water. De 27-jarige Duitse zwemmer was eerder deze week ook al succesvol op de individuele afstanden 5 kilometer, 10 kilometer en de sprint. Wellbrock gaf aan dat de intensieve week zowel fysiek als mentaal veel van hem heeft gevraagd. Met deze overwinning brengt hij zijn totaal op negen gouden WK-medaille in het open water zwemmen, waarmee hij op een indrukwekkende tweede plaats staat achter landgenoot Thomas Lurz, die twaalf titels bezit.

Swimmers who took part in a gruelling eight-mile race from Torquay to Brixham fought off stinging jellyfish to cross the finishing line. Twenty-eight swimmers from all over the country and further afield, ranging in age from late teens to early 60s, took part in the Torbay Swim yesterday (Saturday).
Now known officially as BLDSA Torbay, the event has been running for more than 60 years and is generally considered to be one of the British Long Distance Swimming Association’s toughest events.

International athletes described as the "creme de la creme" of long distance swimming have visited Jersey.
Swimmers from the USA, Mexico and Croatia were among those in the island on Saturday to be inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame.
The awards ceremony takes place in a different location each year when athletes gather to receive their honours, attend a conference and swim.
Swim coach Sally Minty-Gravett MBE, who hosted the event, said the top class athletes wanted to return to the island for more swimming.

Het was tijdens de Olympische Spelen in Parijs met grote regelmaat het gesprek van de dag: het water van de Seine waarin de triatleten en openwaterzwemmers hun prestaties moesten gaan leveren. De rivier was ernstig vervuild en er zouden zelfs drollen in drijven. Gouden medaillewinnares Sharon van Rouwendaal blikt maanden na dato terug.
